Shanghai Checkup Insurance Documents: What to Ask Before You Self-Pay

Separate a Shanghai checkup quote from insurance approval and plan the invoice, itemisation, payment receipt and clinical documents your insurer may request.

Get a coverage answer before treating a receipt as reimbursement

A package price tells you what has been quoted. It does not tell you what your insurer will pay. Before booking a Shanghai checkup, ask your insurer to assess the actual provider, intended examinations and reason for the visit against your policy. Keep their response with the proposal so you can distinguish approved items from matters still awaiting an answer.

Do not rely on a general hospital-insurance relationship as personal authorisation. The Shanghai government's Huadong listing includes insurers associated with direct-payment services in its international-service context. That listing does not establish coverage, direct billing or claim acceptance for a CheckupInChina package.

Ask about the proposed visit, not insurance in the abstract

Send the insurer the named institution, package reference and examination list. Ask whether the screening purpose is covered, whether advance approval or a referral is required, which costs would remain yours, and what documents they need. If approval is conditional, identify the condition and who must satisfy it before payment. The coordinator cannot approve insurance benefits.

State whether you intend to pay yourself and submit a claim, or are asking about direct billing. These are different arrangements. A possible reimbursement claim should not be described as cashless treatment. If the insurer will not give an answer before the visit, make the payment decision understanding that reimbursement remains unresolved.

Build a document request matrix

Swipe the table sideways to read every column.

Documents to discuss; availability and insurer acceptance require confirmation
DocumentQuestion before paymentWho resolves it?
Itemised estimateDoes it identify the provider, examinations and separate coordination services?Coordinator and institution
Invoice or tax invoiceWhich issuer, recipient name, language and format are available? The relevant issuer
Payment receiptWhat proof accompanies each payment? The payment recipient
Clinical reportWhich report is required and when will it be delivered?Institution; insurer specifies its needs
Referral or clinical explanationIs it required, and can the treating clinician provide the relevant record?Insurer and clinician
Claim formWho must complete each section and what is the submission deadline?Insurer

Ask the issuer about the invoice language directly. An English report does not imply that the hospital issues an English tax invoice. A coordination receipt also does not replace a hospital's itemised medical bill. If your insurer requires translation, ask what form they accept and whether any translation cost needs a separate arrangement.

Keep payment identities consistent without exposing private records

Check the legal payment recipient and the name that must appear on each document before transferring money. Where two travellers are booked together, ask whether individual invoices or itemised statements are needed despite a combined quote. Avoid discovering after the visit that the insurer needs each person's expenses identified separately.

Keep private medical records out of the initial website form. The enquiry can say that insurance documents matter and list the document names. Share policy or clinical details later through an agreed private channel with the party that actually needs them. Do not ask staff to change a clinical description simply to make a claim look eligible.

Leave with a document follow-up plan

Before departure, check which receipts are complete and which reports will follow electronically. Record who is supplying any outstanding item and the expected date. The report handover guide helps separate clinical documents from billing records. Request a Shanghai quote with your document requirements, while seeking the coverage decision directly from your insurer.
